LAIKA, in partnership with Focus Features, has released the first official trailer for "Kubo and the Two Strings." Set in ancient mythical Japan, the movie follows the story of Kubo, a young boy living in a seaside town with his mother. His adventure starts when he accidentally summons a spirit from the past, one with a particular vendetta to settle with him.

To save his family, Kubo embarks on a thrilling journey with Beetle and Monkey, battling monsters and gods like the Moon King and the evil twin Sisters with his trusty shamisen, a magical musical instrument. He must find the magical suit of armor once worn by his father, the greatest of the samurais the world has ever seen.

"Kubo is a funny, intense, and ultimately uplifting fairy tale draped in some of the most bizarre and exciting imagery I've ever seen," said Travis Knight, LAIKA's CEO and president. The movie marks his directorial debut, which he worked off a screenplay by Chris Butler and Mark Haimes.

Kubo is voiced by Art Parkinson, who played Rickon Stark in "Game of Thrones." He will be joined by Matthew McConaughey as Beetle, Charlize Theron as Monkey, Ralph Fiennes as Moon King and Rooney Mara as the evil twin Sisters. Others in the cast include George Takei, Brenda Vaccaro and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

LAIKA is the studio behind titles such as "Boxtrolls," "ParaNorman" and "Coraline." "Kubo and the Two Strings" is the fourth project that LAIKA and Focus Features will be working on together, and the first of a new three-picture deal the two inked.

"We believe telling stories is one of the prime functions of the human mind and spirit ... opening us up to new possibilities ... And, in the end, that's ultimately LAIKA's reason for being," said Knight.

When "Kubo and the Two Strings" comes out on Aug. 19 it will be released domestically by Focus Features while its international run will be under Universal Pictures International.
