Samsung has confirmed that the next-generation Edge variant will unsurprisingly be called Galaxy S7 edge.

It's unclear whether the smartphone maker did this on purpose or by accident, but at any rate, this is big news for fans of the Edge lineup.

The Galaxy smartphone blog and community Galaxy Club first spotted (translated) the post that revealed the official moniker of the upcoming flagship on the company's developer website.

What's more, Samsung also published some Edge-exclusive features, ranging from Edge Feeds to Edge Immersive. The most striking out of the bunch is the "Wide Type" panels, and as everyone can imagine, they will bring a slew of new functions to make the most out of the curved design.

Based on the image, these panels will let Edge owners use a compass and check the status of their smartphones via Smart Manager. They can also be used to conveniently add widgets, including updates on the stock market or sports matches. Design-wise, they share some resemblances to Microsoft's Live Tiles that Windows phones use.

To access the "Wide Type" panels, users will have to swipe from the edge, just like the case with "Narrow Type" panels. The settings of where to swipe to bring up certain panels are fully customizable, including the option to add more panels and scroll through them with even more swipes.

For the record, S6 edge and S6 edge+ owners will be delighted to know that these "Wide Type" panels are also going to land on their smartphones when the Android Marshmallow update rolls out.

The Galaxy S7 range is expected to be unveiled on Feb. 21 at the Unpacked event in Barcelona, Spain. It'll take place right before the 2016 Mobile World Congress, which will also be held in Barcelona.

It's also worth mentioning that Samsung is going to premiere the Gear 360 VR camera along with the highly anticipated flagship.

The arrival of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is shaping into one heck of an anticipated event, and it's getting even more exciting by the day.
