Cincinnati can expect faster internet soon as Cincinnati Bell is set to launch Fioptics Gigabit on Sept. 8.

As part of its "Light Up Cincinnati" campaign, Cincinnati Bell is now offering fiber optic services in the form of Fioptics Gigabit. It is set to start rolling out on Sept. 8 but some small businesses already got a taste of gigabit internet in the early days of summer as the carrier was testing out Fioptics Gigabit in the area. Small business accelerator 'The Brandery' was the first small business in Cincinnati to enjoy internet speeds of up to one gigabit per second from Cincinnati Bell.

Light Up Cincinnati is an initiative designed towards providing the residents and businesses in Cincinnati with faster, more accessible and reliable services. All aimed at boosting growth for the city while allowing its residents to learn from and connect with each other as they have never done so before. Light Up Cincinnati is supported by City Mayor John Cranley.

Aside from Fioptics Gigabit, Light Up Cincinnati will also offer free Wi-Fi hotspots around key areas in the city as well as during important events in the community. For instance, Cincinnati Bell had previously set up free Wi-Fi hotspots at the music festivals Bunbury and Buckle Up and during the festivities for Labor Day weekend through the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN fireworks display.

"The company has a unique opportunity to give Cincinnati consumers the capability to upgrade speeds to meet their ever-changing technology needs and do so at competitive prices. Cincinnati Bell's Fioptics Gigabit Internet speed is up to 100 times faster than normal broadband Internet. Our company is transforming from a traditional phone company to a technology company designed to connect people where they live, work and play. Cincinnati Bell is really focused on connecting and bringing folks together in a powerful way," said Cincinnati Bell CEO and President Ted Torbeck.

What can Cincinnati hope to get out of Fioptics Gigabit? Aside from downloading an HD movie and watching it in seconds, users can also stream videos without buffering, play online games seamlessly, listen to music from the cloud without interruptions and backup files and documents on the cloud. TV and internet bundles start at $49.99 a month for 12 months. More than 400 digital channels and over 110 HD channels are available through Fioptics TV.

According to Cincinnati Bell, Fioptics Gigabit is 20 times faster than the fastest internet speed Time Warner Cable is capable of providing its residential customers.
