Snapchat gave web users live updates on the Academy Awards show with the company's online player.

While Snapchat had been rolling out content through its Live updates feature, this is the first time that it had shared content through the Internet.

Previously, users have no way of accessing Snapchat content through their desktop. What the users would usually do is to manually screen-shot the app or maybe even download the image in order to start sharing a Snap.

Snapchat content with a web URL will certainly make it a whole lot easier for users to share a Snap or a Story on their social media accounts. This will definitely make it highly possible for the content to run viral.

On the night of the Academy Awards, people were able to see live updates from the Oscars via Snapchat.com where they viewed the content as a rolling Snapchat Live Story.

"Live Stories are a curated stream of user submitted Snaps from various locations and events. Users who have their location services on at the same event location will be given the option to contribute Snaps to the Live Story. The end result is a Story told from a community perspective with lots of different points of view," the company's support team said.

In order to gain a meaningful live update from the annual awards show, Snapchat's team of reporters made sure that they were stationed on the event's actual location where they waited and filmed the arrivals of prominent entertainment personalities as they walked down the red carpet. The update also contained other interesting contents such as comments on the stars' fashion choices, behind-the-scenes footage and dedicated Snapchat Oscars' filters.

"Get the latest news about the 2016 Oscars, including nominations, winners, predictions and red carpet fashion at The 88th Academy Awards," says Snapchat as it greets users who go to their official site.

Last month, Snapchat launched profile URLs to allow users to instantly follow someone. Touted as an easy way to add friends, profile URLs not only helps a user earn more followers, it's also a venue for Snapchat to promote itself. This is because when a user tries to open one on the desktop web, he is instantly redirected to a Snapchat app download page because the app itself has no web version.

Snapchat has yet to make a statement on whether it will make the web player accessible for all users or it will make it as an exclusive feature to Live Stories.
