Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto first announced the company was looking to make an Amiibo based off of Star Fox's iconic starship back in 2014. Later, news came of prototypes for an Amiibo that would transform from a spaceship into a bi-pedal mech, just like in the upcoming game Star Fox Zero.

That certainly sounded cool, but it looks like it was all too good to be true. Miyamoto recently told IGN in an interview that work on the Arwing Amiibo has ceased after the company was unable to create a child-friendly prototype of the angular starcraft.

"Unfortunately, we won't be releasing an Arwing amiibo," Miyamoto tells the site. "We did have a few prototypes. There was an Arwing amiibo that transforms into the Walker, but we weren't able to turn that into a product that could meet safety guidelines for children."

He goes on to say that, while they are giving up on the idea for now, perhaps "something" could be done with it in the future. As a result, no new Amiibo will be launching alongside Star Fox Zero on the Wii U in April.

That will be a major departure for Nintendo in recent months. The vast majority of recently-released Wii U games have all been bundled, at least at launch, with new Amiibo figures, including Mario Party 10, Yoshi's Wooly World and the just-released Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD.

Even though fans won't be getting new Star Fox Amiibo, Nintendo did reveal a ton of other information about the game. Like Star Fox 64, Star Fox Zero will include branches paths that will allow for multiple playthroughs. Each copy of Star Fox Zero will also come bundled with Star Fox Guard, a separate experience that involves players using security cameras and firing lasers to stop waves of robot invaders.

Star Fox Zero launches for the Wii U on April 21, 2016. In other Nintendo news, the company recently announced that Super Nintendo games would be arriving on the Nintendo 3DS eShop (but only if you own the New Nintendo 3DS), a new Paper Mario game and a new line of Kirby Amiibo to coincide with the character's new 3DS game.
