Whenever there is a mention of maps, we think of Google Maps for getting directions and Apple maps for cracking jokes about. However, there's another mapping service pretty much same gene as Google Maps and it deserves your attention. It's called MapQuest.

MapQuest might not have had a rocking start and it failed considerably in wooing users, but the latest updates would make you think twice.

The updates at first might seem more of cosmetic changes but at the core it has improved a lot. Instead of wasting its efforts on rendering images of buildings in 3D, developers have improved on what it should have. The faster and more responsive MapQuest has been reengineered in terms of cartography and apparently makes easier for anyone to follow directions and recognize streets.

The app has married the iOS 7 flat design concept with simpler fonts which makes it even more irresistible.

Improvements in the navigation is evident too. When you enter a destination location, and begin commuting, the app displays a slider neatly at the top of the route. The slider will show how far have you come. It will also warn you about the possible high traffic zones, suggest traffic rerouting, and let you know your estimated time of arrival to the destination.

You can also add number of layers to the basic map. Simply slide out the menu on the right side of the app to layer your basic map with traffic data, hotels, food courts, bars, banks, pharmacy, gas station, and even satellite imagery.

The update makes it even more useful while driving. With less typing, you will be able to search for the destination and share the same with your family and friends. The update also includes audio prompts which will ensure less interaction with your phone while driving.

MapQuest is available for iOS and Android platforms.
