More proof now confirms that the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is on its way, as the smartphone was just spotted in a Samsung app.

Samsung made a habit of releasing rugged versions of its flagship handsets in the past few years, targeting more active and outdoorsy individuals looking for durable handsets.

With the flagship Galaxy S7 itself already quite rugged itself, now water-resistant and more durable overall, some may wonder if there's really a need for an Active version anymore. The previous Galaxy S6 and S6 edge flagships could not withstand water or dust particles, so a Galaxy S6 Active made sense, but now?

Well, the Galaxy S7 Active may still find its place in the market, adding even more ruggedness on top of what the flagship S7 already offers. While the S7 is water-resistant, the S7 Active should be waterproof. At the same time, the Galaxy S7 has a glass back that could get shattered, whereas an Active version should have a far sturdier design.

After the purported Samsung Galaxy S7 Active was allegedly spotted in the wild, complete with AT&T branding, another sighting now bolsters expectations of an imminent launch.

SamMobile spotted the Galaxy S7 Active listed in a Samsung app, which is as close as we got so far to an official confirmation. More specifically, the Samsung Level app available in the Google Play store lists compatible devices, including the Galaxy S7 Active.

No specs are certain just yet, but the rugged smartphone should come with military-grade certification such as MIL-STD-810G to ensure protection against liquids, dust, drops, bumps and other mishaps.

In terms of hardware specifications, the Galaxy S7 Active should feature roughly the same specs as the flagship S7, albeit with a larger battery if the S6 Active is any indication.

Trusted tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) recently said the device sports the code name "Poseidon," which could be a clue toward extra-heavy waterproofing.

It remains unclear for now just when the handset will make its official debut, but all signs point to an imminent release. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is expected to launch as an AT&T exclusive in the United States, just like its predecessors.

The Galaxy S5 Active was the only one to make its way to Sprint, rebranded as the Galaxy S5 Sport, but the Galaxy S6 Active never got a Sport version nor made it to other carriers.

No official information is currently available regarding the price or launch date of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active, but we'll keep you in the loop as soon as more details hit the surface.
