Sony is officially updating its Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, but only select models get the treat for now.

More specifically, the update is rolling out now to the Xperia Z2 with model number D6503, the Xperia Z3 with model number D6603 and the Xperia Z3 Compact with model number D5803.

The latest firmware comes with build number 23.5.A.0.570, which is the same as the beta release that recently rolled out to the same Xperia handsets.

The fact that only the aforementioned model numbers of the Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact are getting Marshmallow now suggests that those variants were on a fast-track schedule for the update release, but other versions should get the same treatment soon enough.

For now, however, Xperia Z2, Z3 or Z3 Compact owners with other models than the ones mentioned here will have to wait until the firmware is ready for their specific variant. Sony has yet to detail just when that will happen.

Meanwhile, those with carrier versions of the three Xperia handsets are in for an even longer wait, as additional testing usually delays the process.

As the Xperia Blog reports, this Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow build now reaching the Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact includes both the new Camera 2.0.0 UI and the February Android security patch.

The camera user interface is virtually the same app found on the Xperia Z5, adding some new features such as real-time brightness adjustment, the ability to swipe between camera modes and others.

The February Android security patch, meanwhile, is obviously not the latest one Google released, but it will still add some extra protection for the handsets.

Lastly, it's worth pointing out that not all global markets where the three Xperia variants are available are getting the update now. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is reportedly rolling out to the aforementioned smartphones in the United States, Ukraine, Russia, North Africa, the Middle East and likely Latin America.

Those in other markets could get the treat in the next few days, but no details are currently available in this regard.
