The Ellcrys is saved, and all is well in the Four Lands.

MTV's The Shannara Chronicles just got renewed for a second season. The fantasy-based drama, based on a series of novels by Terry Brooks, follows the quest of three heroes as they struggle to save a dying tree and their world from an army of reawakened demons.

The show debuted in January as a Game of Thrones alternative, but with a lot less bloodshed and nudity and more fantasy and noble heroes. Inspired by Brooks' novels, the 10-episode first season revolved around the elfstones of Shannara and the adventures of Wil Ohmsford, Amberle Elessedil and Eretria as they set out on an important quest to save the world. The fantasy setting is not based on the past, though, but the far distant future, on an Earth now shared by elves, orcs and humans.

Many fans of the books questioned how and why the epic fantasy series ended up at MTV, but Brooks assured fans that it had everything to do with how the cable network committed itself to the story he originally wrote.

"And they said 'we want you to go with MTV' and I said that wouldn't have been my first guess as to where you were going to want to put it, but they said 'the reason we're doing this is because we feel they have made the strongest commitment to the effort they would put behind it, the money they would put behind it, the production values, and so forth,'" Brooks said in an interview. "They are head and shoulders above everybody else."

It seems that decision was the right one, because now, MTV plans on giving the series another go.

"This dream team delivered a beautiful, ground breaking show with compelling stories and character journeys which brought in new viewers," EVP and Head of Scripted Development at MTV Mina Lefevre said to Deadline.

The Shannara Chronicles starred Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett and Aaron Jakubenko. John Rhys-Davies also had a recurring role during the show's first season.

Expect the second season of The Shannara Chronicles to air in early 2017.
