Legendary animator Bruce Timm will be returning to the world of the DC Comics universe for a new animated Justice League mini-series that will be released online exclusively through Machinima.

According to Variety, the show is called Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles and will follow "darker", alternate universe versions of heroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. The show is based on an upcoming 2015 DC animated universe film, titled Justice League: Gods and Monsters. Timm is serving as an executive producer on the show and film, with his old partner Alan Burnett co-producing.

Gods and Monsters Chronicles will be the first project from Warner Bros.' new digital content production unit, with Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, leading the effort.

"We couldn't be happier to be announcing our first new digital series today, and we're even more excited that it's a collaboration with such accomplished storytellers as Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, who have been responsible for some of the most innovative and creative DC Universe projects," Register said. "We can't wait for fans to have a chance to see the world they have created when Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles debuts on Machinima next year."

Warner Bros. invested $18 million in the online content producer Machinima earlier this year, and Gods and Monsters Chronicles will be the first programming collaboration between the two groups. Machinima has more than 11 million subscribers on YouTube and includes other digital-first shows like Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

Gods and Monsters Chronicles will be released in three-parts, weeks before the release of the Justice League: Gods and Monsters animated film.

Anybody familiar with Timm's previous work with DC animation will know why this is something worth getting excited about. For a taste of what is in store, check out this short Timm did for Batman's 75th anniversary.

Timm is one of the primary contributors to DC's "Animated Universe," which includes Timm's Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. His work on Batman is still, to this day, one of the best renditions of the Caped Crusader, and the show even introduced fan-favorite characters like Harley Quinn to the world of DC Comics. His work on Justice League and Justice League Unlimited proves Timm understands each member of the superhero team perfectly. It is hard to think of a better man for the job.
