HTC is teasing a new camera through a mysterious video showing a device that will be waterproof and able to capture slow-motion video.

The impending hardware would mark a change for HTC from smartphones, which the company is best known. Rumors suggest HTC is working on other non-smartphone devices too, such as a virtual reality headset that responds to brain waves.

Latest reports suggest the camera will be some kind of attachment for a user's phone and will connect wirelessly, allowing users to take the camera underwater or attach it to clothes.

The device will be useful for the more adventurous and will also likely compete with the likes of the GoPro, a popular camera that can be mounted to a helmet or a user's clothing.

The video released teases some of the things the camera will be capable of and is titled "Something Remarkable is Coming." In the description, the video states  users should visit RECamera.com on October 8 "for the World premiere of a remarkable new product."

A Reddit user headed to the site just happened to stumble upon it while it was briefly being tested, even managing to snap up a few images. The images show the device looks something like a periscope and will clip onto clothing.

Rumors suggest the camera will have a 16MP sensor and will clearly come with a wide lens and be waterproof.

The real selling point will be the price however. If HTC is able to release the product relatively cheap, it could be in serious competition with GoPro, which has led the way in body-mountable cameras for the past few years.

HTC has also launched a Twitter account for the product with the handle @re_camera, with one tweet.

"Taking a picture has traditionally meant you're too busy behind the camera, framing the scene. But what have you been missing?" reads the tweet.

The release will be an interesting move for HTC, who has stuck to smartphones for a while. It will signify a strategy from HTC to start releasing other products, although the company did recently say it was not interested in smartwatches.

HTC is rumored to have a number of other interesting products in the works, including a virtual reality headset that reads brainwaves, unlike Google Glass, which is voice controlled and has a couple touch sensitive areas for user input.
