Sony has pushed out version 3.55 for the PlayStation 4 in a new system update that weighs in at just below 300 MB.

The update is a mandatory one to install for PlayStation 4 gamers and is now available for download. It will have to be installed before gamers are able to access online multiplayer modes and the PlayStation Store.

To apply the update, gamers will have to access the Settings menu of the gaming console and then select System Software Update. After the on-screen prompts, the update will download and take the PlayStation 4 to version 3.55.

While the update is essential for gamers to continue enjoying their PlayStation 4, it unfortunately does not add any new features to the gaming console. According to Sony's patch notes for the update, it contains improvements to the quality of the performance of the PlayStation 4 system and nothing else.

There is no mention on specific details on how system performance will be improved with the update. However, while version 3.55 could be seen as a less valuable one compared with version 3.50, it is possible that the update is laying down the groundwork for the much more massive version 4.00.

Version 3.50 for the PlayStation 4 system, which also has a size of about 300 MB, is packed with features and improvements, including PlayStation 4 to PC Remote Play, the Play Together feature and updates to the social side of the platform.

PlayStation 4 version 3.5 also started to allow players to create events, which will invite fellow gamers to participate in planned gaming sessions. Gamers also started to receive notifications when one of their listed friends on the gaming console go online, though the software update also added stealth mode to prevent gamers from letting others know that they are logged in.

Version 4.00, on the other hand, is expected to usher in the launch of PlayStation VR upon its launch on Oct. 13. Demonstrations for the PlayStation 4's virtual reality headset have already started in the United States, with the system to be sold at $399 for just the PlayStation VR unit alone. Sony will also be selling a $499 bundle containing the PlayStation VR, the PlayStation Camera, a pair of Move controllers and the PlayStation VR Worlds, which is a demo of the PlayStation VR's capabilities.

Preorders for the PlayStation VR Core Bundle, which is the one being sold for $399, started back in March, with preorders for the PlayStation VR Launch Bundle, which is the one priced at $499, starting two weeks prior.
