Following Nintendo's announcement of its new title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild during the E3 2016, plus its revelation that there is no option to play a female character in the game, the company now says that Link will forever be the hero of Zelda games.

The announcement that gamers have no option to play the role of a female character in the game did not only surprise quite a few of the series' fans; it also somehow killed off earlier speculations about the availability of the said option in the latest title.

Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently said in an interview that Link is the hero in the classic games in the series, and added that this fact will certainly not change. The creator, though, does not get rid of the possibility to have a spinoff for the game that will feature a female Link.

"We clearly talked with the team to make a game centered about Sheik, so I cannot say it is impossible to see something of the sort in the future," said Miyamoto, "but in the classic games in the series, Link is the hero and that will not change."

Miyamoto said such words in an interview that Gamekult published during the weekend which was then translated into English (from French) by Nintendo Everything.

Why There Is No Female Character In The Main Zelda Games

During the new game's announcement, Eiji Aonuma, Zelda's producer, provided an explanation as to why Nintendo did not make a female character hero in the Breath of the Wild.

"[I]f we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?" said Aonuma.

With that in mind, it would, therefore, make more sense to come back to the original makeup of the game.

In the meantime, Gamekult also asked Miyamoto his level of involvement in this particular Nintendo project.

"In the past, I was heavily invested in Zelda, whether for establishing the basis or to adjust small details on the way," said Miyamoto. "With the help of my colleagues, I could deliver a key game in hand and then let the team take care of the closure."

Considering the size of the game currently being developed, there exist various teams that are in charge of different aspects of the production.

He went on to say that as the whole team is already near the end of game development, he said that he is going to be much more involved in polishing different parts of the game.
