Ninja Gaiden fans may have something to look forward to in the upcoming weeks, as it has been recently confirmed that a new project related to the series is currently in the works.

The news came straight from Keiji Yamagishi, the music composer for the Ninja Gaiden series, who took to Twitter just a few hours ago to announce that he's currently working on a project related to the series.

Yes, indeed, this is great news for fans who fell in love with the series ever since its debut in the arcades back in 1988. Ninja Gaiden went on strong for several years after that, but the series suddenly disappeared after Ninja Gaiden Trilogy came out in 1995. It wasn't until 2004 that a more modernized version of Ninja Gaiden was released — also simply dubbed Ninja Gaiden — a game that captured the hearts of a new generation of fans and became emblematic of what a difficult game truly was.

Unfortunately, that came to an end as well, when Ninja Gaiden 3 came out in 2012, marking the end of the main series.

Now, fast-forward to 2016, and fans are left with this intriguing news. What could this new Ninja Gaiden-related project be? Under normal circumstances, the assumption would be that this mystery project is Ninja Gaiden 4, which would serve as a sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3, as well as the next entry in the main series.

However, the phrasing is oddly specific, as Yamagishi didn't say new game, he said "new project," meaning it could be just about anything, so long as it is something in which a music composer would have to be involved. In fact, it could even go down the pachinko route in theory (much like Metal Gear Solid did), as those machines could also make some use of those talents. Of course, a pachinko machine is the absolute worst case scenario, as there are plenty of far superior alternatives.

Fortunately for fans, whatever this project turns out to be, they won't need to wait too long to figure out what it is. Yamagishi stated that more news would be coming in July, and the only event that comes to mind for that month is the San Diego Comic-Con. Maybe Team Ninja will have an animated movie to show off with its announcement?

Either way, July isn't too far away, so fans will just have to hold out until then.
