A recent speed test pitted the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, LG G5 and HTC 10 against each other to determine which the fastest smartphone was.

In an earlier, but relevant report, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge was pitted against the HTC 10, and the latter phone came out the victor despite a relatively close race. In another test, the S7 edge and LG G5 were seemingly tied after a series of laps, each phone performing better at certain levels to even out the score.

It should be noted that the tests were performed by two sources, using different means to examine each phone's performance capabilities and thus, cannot be used to conclude that the LG G5 will perform better than the HTC 10.

Fortunately, PhoneBuff, the company responsible for the S7 edge vs. HTC 10 round, has conducted another speed test that includes all three flagship mobile devices. The S7 edge used in this match, however, is the latest variant running on the Exynos chipset, in contrast with the versions used in earlier trials.

Before we detail the specifics of the test, as well as the overall victor, let's have a short rundown of the specifications for each of the competing flagship devices.

Phone Specs

For performance specs, the LG G5 and HTC 10 used in the test both have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset that features a dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo and dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo CPU. These phones also run on an Adreno 530 GPU.

On the other hand, the S7 edge is the latest variant built with an Exynos 8890 octa chipset, as mentioned, that utilizes quad-core 2.3 GHz Mongoose and quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53 CPUs. It runs on a Mali-T880 MP12 GPU.

Internally, all three devices support 4 GB of RAM and have the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS installed.

Speed Test

To determine which of the phones would come out the "Android Speed Test Champ," the phones were first tested individually. The documented footage of each phone was then placed beside that of the others in a collective video. The phones were also set to run a timer in the background while the tests ran, consisting of two rounds.

The first round had each phone opening various apps in quick succession — its native camera and music player; a series of games like Angry Birds and Asphalt 8; performance-heavy Photoshop Mix; Lapse It, where the phone had to create a time-lapse video using the same material and lastly, a series of web apps like ESPN and Amazon.com.

The LG G5 started and finished strong in this round (1:36.27), with the S7 edge catching up, but ultimately falling behind in the time-lapse portion (1:42.61). The HTC 10, meanwhile, lagged behind an app or two (1:56.00).

In the second round, the phones had to reopen the same apps that were all left running in the background. Basically, this round determines which phone can keep the most apps running at the same time without affecting performance greatly.

The S7 edge and HTC 10 quickly caught up and surpassed the LG G5, which had to re-initialize some of its apps. The final results place the S7 edge as the victor with 2.20.01, the HTC 10 coming in second at 2:22.10 and lastly, the LG G5 at 2:24.11.
