Samsung's designer Serif TV may be an acquired taste for some, but it's now available for preorder in the United States for the first time.

The TV set may spark two reactions: you either love the design or you hate it altogether, especially when considering value for money. A potential third reaction might ensue, though: confusion.

If you can't decide whether you love it or hate it, here are the basic details about the Serif TV's specs and price.

First off, the Samsung Serif TV is an LED 4K television set with HDR, Wi-Fi, various apps and three HDMI ports, among the highlights. The TV can also serve as a Bluetooth speaker should the need arise. If the tall legs of the device don't suit your fancy, you might be pleased to know that they come off. The TV cannot be mounted on a wall, however, because it's designed to look like furniture.

That doesn't sound too shabby, but the price does seem a bit exaggerated for what it has to offer. The 40-inch TV that is now available for preorder in the United States sports a bold $1,499 price tag, because it's a designer piece. An additional $40 shipping charge also applies, but that's just change compared with the full price tag of the TV.

French duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec designed the Serif TV, which somewhat resembles the letter "I" with serif font in profile, hence the choice of name.

"When the Bouroullec Brothers designed the Serif TV, they envisioned an object that fits into everyday life—a hybrid of furniture design and technology," the Museum of Modern Art notes on its product page for the device. "The Serif TV is inspired by old picture frames and was designed to serve as one collective screen: A TV with a user interface that can apply a filter over the content, creating a 'curtain mode' in which viewers can access services such as a clock, Bluetooth speakers, apps and their photo gallery."

The TV actually comes in three sizes, but only the 40-inch model reached the U.S. exclusively through the Museum of Modern Art. Interested customers who don't mind shelling out $1,499 on a 40-inch TV can choose either blue or white color options.

Those who preorder the designer Samsung Serif TV will have to muster their patience, however, as the device will not ship until Aug. 15. The product page lists the Serif TV as backordered, indicating that the hefty price tag did not scare off potential buyers.
