Though Harley Quinn has been seen wearing various outfits in the years since her debut, her most iconic outfit is still the original jester outfit she sported in Batman: The Animated Series. Harley Quinn will soon be making her live-action film debut in David Ayer's upcoming Suicide Squad, and while Margot Robbie's Quinn doesn't wear the iconic red and black suit, that doesn't mean the suit itself won't make an appearance.

The news comes via Suicide Squad costume designer Kate Hawley, who told reporters recently that a jester costume was actually created for the film.

"The jester suit has an amazing, powerful quality to it," Hawley said. "We built that. We actually put it on Margot, and she looked amazing. There's a moment where there's homage to that very garment. What happens, though, and the way David works — and I'm not speaking out of turn here — and because it's a very organic quality and he's writing it as we speak, the weight of things change. There's beats that you think you can establish an arc within and then it changes again. We have limited beats to show all the elements."

It sounds like, over time, the film's interpretation of Quinn changed, and when that happened, so did her costume. As for what Hawley means be a "homage" to the jester outfit, that remains to be seen. Might the suit be included in the film as an Easter egg for fans? That's certainly what it sounds like. Hawley goes on to mention a scene where the various members of the team receive their costumes en route to their mission.

"There's a delightful scene where they're all putting on their 'murderous suits,' as they call them, because when they put them on, people die," she said. "And Harley's sitting there and you'll see a moment where she's putting on all her corsets, so we quote every comic variation of her. It's her dress-up box. And I feel sure that jester suit is going to come into it because none of us can leave it alone."

Hawley's comments are still rather vague as to whether or not that definitively means fans will at least get a look at the finished jester costume, but if not, there's always the sequel. Suicide Squad is shaping up to be a big hit for DC and Warner Bros. (experts are projecting the film to bring in more than $100 million opening weekend), so it seems like Suicide Squad 2 is a given. If that happens, fans will get yet another chance to see Quinn sporting her original look.
