LG is stepping up its smart home game with the new Smart InstaView Door-in-Door fridge that has a huge 29-inch touch-screen that's powered by Windows 10.

Just to be clear of what's in store, it features a full-fledged version of the OS, and that means it can run apps from the Windows Store and even familiar ones such as MS Paint and the voice assistant Cortana.

To make it useful beyond a quick doodle or two, LG has developed Windows 10 apps that allows the user to make notes on it, view recipes and their nutritional content and set a timer, which are all convenient functions to have in the kitchen.

On top of that, the display also becomes transparent by knocking on it so that the contents of the fridge are visible. Thanks to that, users can mark food that's behind the screen. For instance, they can write down the expiration date of milk or perhaps their plans with the ingredients.

That's not its only purpose, though, as another idea behind it is also to conserve energy, as there's now a way to check out what's inside the refrigerator without having to open it, not to mention that perishables will last longer because they will be kept at a steady temperature more often.

As for what's under the tablet's hood, it houses an Intel Atom processor with 2 GB worth of RAM, and it's just a bit crazy to think how those components are fitted in a kitchen appliance.

While the price of the Smart InstaView Door-in-Door fridge has yet to be revealed, it's a safe bet to assume that it'll come at a pretty steep cost. LG hasn't given out the details regarding availability too, only listing the InstaView lineup as "coming soon" on the official website.

Also, it should be pointed out that this product is similar to the Family Hub that Samsung unwrapped at CES 2016, and it looks like LG isn't going to let its rival take the whole smart home pie. With that said, the competition is heating up even more.

To boil things down, a Windows 10-powered fridge might not be the most pragmatic choice, but it sure as heck is interesting to have in the kitchen.
