While the OnePlus 3 is already discontinued to make way for the OnePlus 3T, OnePlus' work on the device's software continues. The company recently unloaded the OxygenOS 3.5.6, a new beta community build that introduces key changes including a major security patch.

OxygenOS Open Beta

Most importantly, the 3.5.6 build also known as OxygenOS Open Beta 7, is not based on Android 7.0 Nougat, which is expected to roll out in December.

Except for the Android security patch, which has been launched this November, there are no major improvements especially to the user interface. This is not saying, however, that there are no noticeable improvements.

The beta build introduces a new audio tuner functionality and it can be accessed by going to the sound option in the Settings menu. The updated OS build is also shipping with an app-freezing mechanism that works in the background. Some UI tweaks include a new accent color and a visual redesign of the native clock app.

Bug fixes are also given. OnePlus touts that the OxygenOS 3.5.6 will have more stable performance overall, specifically eliminating the issue that concerns launcher crashes. OnePlus 3 owners should also be happy to know that the persistent black screen that follows when exiting a game set in horizontal orientation is already fixed.

How To Install

Since the OxygenOS 3.5.6 is in open beta build, it is available to everyone. Users in other regions, who can't seem to find or download the file, can just set their VPN to Germany or to countries where the file is available. Once the file is downloaded, follow the steps below.

Before proceeding, make sure to confirm the instruction and that you are following it to the letter. Like OnePlus, we cannot guarantee results on the rooted devices, especially if you are using alternative ROMS.

  1. Install the required adb files on your computer.
  2. Open your OnePlus 3 in Recovery Mode. This is achieved by turning the device on with the power and volume down buttons pressed simultaneously.
  3. Once the Recovery screen pops up, choose the Install from USB option. The system will notify you with this message: "You are in sideload mode."
  4. Connect the device to a Mac or PC. Once done, run the following lines in the command prompt/terminal:
    Windows: "adb sideload "
    Mac/Linux: "./adb sideload "
  5. The phone should start updating and will reboot itself when the process is complete.

OnePlus has reminded users that in installing the OxygenOS Open Beta 7, failing to follow the correct process could damage the hardware. Users are also advised to make a backup of all their personal data and files because the process can lead to a complete data wipe.

If successfully installed, users should remember that their OnePlus 3s will no longer receive official OTA updates. They will only receive community OTAs.
