A new apple has been created that will actually feel like a fizzy soda pop in your mouth when you bite into it. The apple was a result of cross breeding from two apple varieties and years of experimentation.
The fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 allowed for easier access to Resi apple specimens - known for their sweet texture. Through years of trial and error cross-breeding and genetic modification with the Pirouette apple variety, the new sparkling apple was born.
The "franken-apple" has been named The Paradis Sparkling Apple. It is the first apple in the world to fizzle when it is bit into - similar to how a sparkling drink would feel in your mouth. However, the juice of the apple itself is not sparkling - so no instant pressed sparkling cider can be made from these apples.
According to Robert Maierhofer, the production manager at the family firm Lubera, the Swiss fruit nursery which developed the new sparkling apple specimen, it was genetically modified so that it's huge cells open up when bit into.
"It has a soft texture but a heavy crunch and very big cells that open up in the mouth, releasing a lot of acidity and sugar that gives you a feeling of having a fizzy drink," he said.
The official website for Lubera describes the apples thusly, "An apple is an apple. But not in this case. Our new breeding Paradis Sparkling® is different. So different, just as the name describes: Sparkling® explodes in your mouth. When the large cells release their juice, it feels as if CO2 is brought into play. To stay with the analogy: Paradis Sparkling® is the first apple that is not 'still', but 'sparkling'!"
The first apples will be available for 2015, according to a video released on gardenvideo.com but sapling trees for the Paradis Sparkling Apple available for sale at 34.40 pounds each or approximately 58.45 dollars.
The video also reveals that the apples are slightly irregular and cutting into them already reveals that distinct crunch sound that indicates the cells are very big and juicy - to give it that fizzy feeling in the mouth.
