Every year at CES, LG has been dominating one product category: television. This year, it is on track to defending this position with a slew of new 4K technologies that are leaving spectators amazed here at the world's biggest electronics exhibition.

The South Korean company has initiated its big push at CES 2017 with the unveiling of its signature OLED W 4K HDR Smart TV.

Wallpaper Thin

The W stands for "wallpaper," and it should already give you an indication what the TV is like. It is so thin you would never see anything like it before if you have been a regular CES participant.

The concept seems aimed at creating a television that would feel at home on the wall, with the assortment of your picture frames and even paintings.

It is worth noting that most picture frames would be even thicker, as this TV is about as thin as four stacked credit cards at 2.57 millimeters. Once installed on the wall, it looks almost flushed into it, staying true to its wallpaper credentials.

When hung on surfaces such as glass, you will have the effect of a floating picture. Unfortunately, due to its structure, it cannot stand on its own, so the only option is to mount the TV on the wall.

Two-Part High-End TV Setup

If you are wondering how LG was able to develop such a thin television, the device has another component: the soundbar. Certainly, it functions as a speaker system impressing with its Dolby Atmos technology. It is, however, bigger than conventional soundbars such as what Samsung is also unveiling at CES.

The soundbar also hosts the bulk of the TV's main internals. This is where you will find the ports such as HDMI. Only a ribbon-like cable connects it to the W display.

So since the brain is largely housed in the soundbar, some have taken to calling the display a dumb but beautiful screen.

Technology Highlights

As an OLED TV, the W can provide astounding picture quality while consuming less power and real estate because its pixels can light itself up without a need for a backlighting component. It can offer deeper blacks as well as wider range of color owing to its HDR feature.

"LG OLED pixels create their own light, and can switch off to achieve truly perfect black levels with zero light bleed, providing the foundation for displaying the lush, vibrant color that only LG OLED TV can deliver," LG said.

There is, however, little improvements in terms of quality when compared to last year's LG OLED TV range, and LG itself admits this point.

Nevertheless, the star of the show is its ultrathin construction, and that itself is more than enough to satisfy us.
