Sony's PlayStation Network online service will be going down for six hours today starting at 12 p.m. EST for scheduled maintenance.

During the maintenance players will be unable to access the PlayStation store, play online or access entertainment apps like Netflix with their PlayStation Network account. However, if you are logged onto the PlayStation Network before the maintenance begins, you will still be able play online.

Sony hasn't given an exact reason for the maintenance, but it's possible it is to prepare for the release of several high-profile games in the form of Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4 and the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto V tomorrow.

The PS4's last update, version 2.0, added new features like Share Play, but also caused numerous problems for PlayStation players as a result. Some users reported having trouble connecting to apps like YouTube, while others had the more serious issue of a bugged "rest" mode.

This mode puts the PS4 in a low power state used for downloads and charging controllers, but the update made it so some PS4s coming out of rest mode would fail to reboot. The update also caused problems with the early access alpha of Evolve, causing a delay of the alpha on Sony's console. All these problems have since been fixed, but no doubt Sony is painfully aware of past problems and are looking to prevent them in the future with this scheduled downtime ahead of some of this holiday's biggest game releases.
