A mysterious item spotted on Mars, believed to be a cannonball, is apparently proof that there was an ancient war among aliens that wiped out the Martian civilization.

The claim was made by prolific UFO hunter Scott C. Waring of UFO Sightings Daily, as the debate on whether alien life existed rages on.

Mars Cannonball: Proof Of Ancient Alien Life?

In his website, Waring claimed that a strange object that was spotted on the surface of Mars by the Curiosity Rover is a metal ball that is about as large as a softball. Waring theorizes that the object is actually a cannonball.

"This is 100% evidence of a war on Mars," Waring claimed, adding that the projectile is surrounded on the Martian surface by the rubble of stone. The pieces, the UFO hunter said, are actually fragments of what was once part of the civilization that thrived on the Red Planet.

Waring believes that cannonballs such as the one spotted by the Curiosity Rover were shot at Mars from space to burn away the planet's atmosphere, resulting in the destruction of the life and civilization that was on the planet.

The so-called cannonballs certainly look out of place in the red surface of Mars. Unfortunately, for Waring, the phenomenon has already been explained by NASA. In a process called concretion, minerals build up inside bubbles within sedimentary rock at the bottom of water bodies. Because the sedimentary rock is relatively soft compared to the minerals, perfectly spherical metal balls are formed when the water dries up. This is what happened with what was once liquid water on Mars, leaving behind Waring's cannonball.

Life On Mars

While UFO hunters such as Waring are obsessed with the life that they claimed was once on Mars, others are instead focused on bringing the life on Earth to the Red Planet.

Last month, researchers were able to make earthworms reproduce in Mars-like soil, which will make growing crops possible on the Red Planet. A team from MIT also won this year's Mars City Design competition on what a future colony on Mars could look like.

Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, detailed his vision of a Martian city with a million human inhabitants earlier in the year. He believed that the key to realizing his vision is for SpaceX to create transportation options that would make moving to Mars affordable.

Musk is already looking forward to living on Mars, apparently, as he said that he will be sending his personal Tesla Roadster up to Mars on the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
