The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a launch title for the Nintendo Switch, stole the show at the 21st DICE Awards with four trophies.

The annual video gaming event, which is held by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, gives out awards for several categories, including Game of the Year.

Nintendo Dominates 2018 DICE Awards

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild walked away with the night's most prestigious award, Game of the Year. The latest entry in the long-running Nintendo franchise also won in the categories of Adventure Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, and Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction.

With so many accolades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it's a shame that there will be no more DLC that will be released for the game.

Link's latest adventure was not the only game that brought Nintendo to the 21st DICE Awards, though. Other Nintendo games that won awards include Metroid: Samus Returns for Handheld Game of the Year, Fire Emblem Heroes for Mobile Game of the Year, Super Mario Odyssey for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Racing Game of the Year. Snipperclips, developed by SFB Games but published by Nintendo, won the DICE Sprite Award and Family Game of the Year.

The DICE Awards also conferred its seventh Lifetime Achievement Award to the recently retired Genyo Takeda, who was a special corporate adviser for Nintendo and was instrumental in the development of the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo Wii consoles.

2018 DICE Awards Winners

Aside from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the other big winner of the night is Cuphead for the Xbox One and PC. The notoriously difficult, retro-looking game took home the awards for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Animation, and Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition.

A handful of other games won two trophies each at the 2018 DICE Awards. These are Horizon Zero Dawn for Outstanding Achievement in Story and Outstanding Technical Achievement, Lone Echo/Echo Arena for Immersive Reality Game of the Year and Immersive Reality Technical Achievement, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for Action Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay.

Sports Game of the Year was awarded to FIFA 18, while Role-Playing Game of the Year went to Nier: Automata. Injustice 2 won Fighting Game of the Year, and Senua of Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice won Outstanding Achievement in Character.

Nintendo Switch Continues Momentum Into 2018

The momentum of Nintendo, along with the Nintendo Switch, has been carried over from last year into this year with the strong showing at the 2018 DICE Awards.

The Nintendo Switch was again the best-selling console in January 2018, according to a report by The NPD Group. However, the entire video game industry is actually performing well, with customers spending the most on the PlayStation 4 platform and the Xbox One having its best January ever.
