It was in September when Netflix launched its Facebook-based Social Recommendation feature which users can access through the Netflix site, iPhone, iPad, Xbox, PS3, and a number of smart TVs and set-top boxes. Now, the popular on-demand Internet streaming media provider is extending the feature to Android devices.

The Android app update enables Netflix users to receive rich notifications of movie and TV show recommendations to their Android devices. They can start viewing media content, receive more info, or even thank a friend for sending the recommendation.

"Now you can easily, and privately, recommend the shows you love to the people you care about, right from your Android phone," said Netflix in blog post.

The Android app update takes full advantage of the rich push notification capabilities in an Android device. By adding images and action buttons, users can watch, gather more info, or show their gratefulness to a friend for sending the recommendation.

The update means that Android users who are on Netflix can privately share and receive recommendations from their friends directly on their Android phone. This way, users can be assured that their news feeds will not be clogged. Furthermore, users who own Android Wear-powered smartwatches can enjoy the same notification support that the update offers to the smartphone.

With the Android Wear integration of Netflix, users can receive a recommendation when a ping is sent to the watch. Once the alert is triggered, they can start viewing the content on their phone. They can also do other things such as play or pause movies, thank their friends for the wonderful recommendation and learn more details on the recommended show. There's also an access that allows the user to manipulate the shows remotely.

"We've created an Android Wear integration that alerts you when you've received a recommendation, and lets you watch, thank, play, or get more details on the show," said Netflix.

The Social Recommendation feature seemed to be currently available in Google Play. However, the Android Wear support may become available in a future update.

"We're excited to bring this experience to our Android phone users," said Netflix.
