Some players find that they can't use the voice chat feature of the action-adventure video game Sea of Thieves, and this is because they might have unknowingly disabled it.

On Windows 10, over-eager new Sea of Thieves players might have skipped some prompts at the beginning of the game that disables the feature. If a player closes the window or chooses the "No" option when the dialog box for microphone access shows up, the system won't allow the game to access the microphone.

Unfortunately, there is no option in the in-game menu that changes the permission setting of the Sea of Thieves voice chat. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to enable it on PC and Xbox.

Sea Of Thieves Windows 10 Voice Chat

To enable the voice communication feature on the Windows 10 platform, players must go to the OS' privacy settings. However, they must close Sea of Thieves completely first.

On the desktop, they should then click the Start button and search for "Privacy," without quotes. The top of the results should be "Privacy Settings," which players should select.

Then, players must select the "Microphone" option at the left-hand side of the new window. Under the "Let apps use my Microphone," the toggle should be set to On. After which, players must turn it on for the game by looking for the "Sea of Thieves Technical Alpha" among the apps and setting the toggle to On.

That should enable the voice chat on the Sea of Thieves Windows 10 version.

Sea Of Thieves Xbox One Audio Chat

On Xbox One, this Sea of Thieves error has plenty of solutions. However, the first thing that Rare recommends is to try to reconnect the device, whether that be a headset or the Kinect.

Players must also ensure that the device is not muted. For Kinect, there's a "Kinect mic for chat" option in the Settings menu while it is connected to the console. This must be set to On to activate the microphone.

Like in Windows 10, the privacy settings must allow voice communication and allow Sea of Thieves to access the microphone. For the first setting, players must go to "Settings" > "Account" > "Privacy and online safety" > "Xbox Live privacy" > "Communication and multiplayer" > "Voice, text, invites."

To allow the game to access the microphone, players must choose "App privacy" after "Privacy and online safety." From there, the "Microphone" setting can be adjusted.

Rare also acknowledges the issue wherein players join a Party Chat, but they cannot communicate.

"Players who don't accept the invite or join the crew late are not automatically added, so they may believe that their chat isn't working and their crew is silent," says Rare.

The solution is to try the steps outlined above.

Following these steps should take care of the Sea of Thieves voice chat issue on the Xbox One. If there are still problems, players are encouraged to report it to Rare.
