Huawei Unveils Porsche Design Mate RS With 512 GB Storage, In-Screen Fingerprint Scanner, And An Insane Price

Close

Customers who have a spare of over $2,000 just lying around can get the just-unveiled Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS, which comes with a whopping 512 GB of storage and one of the most sought-after smartphone features in recent months: an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Huawei calls the phone its "new flagship" and gave it the specs to match, too. Aside from 512 GB of onboard storage, the phone has not one but two fingerprint scanners: one mounted on the rear and one embedded under its 6-inch OLED display.

Vivo already showed off a concept phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, but it looks like Huawei will be the first company to deliver a phone with that feature to the market.

Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS Specs

As for the specs, everything powering this phone is top-of-the-line. It has 6 GB of RAM, 4,000 mAh battery, and Huawei Kirin 970 chipset. The camera department is also similarly spec'd out, with a total of three Leica cameras just on the back — a 40-megapixel RGB sensor, a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor, and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor. There's also a 24-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies.

The phone's design is reminiscent of Porsche Design's signature aesthetic, featuring sleek, svelte, and highly luxurious materials.

"The [Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS] has been built with exceptional accuracy, meaning each component is there for a specific reason, and exactly where it needs to be to ensure the user gets the best possible experience in terms of power and aesthetics," the company said in a press release.

Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS Price And Release Date

The phone is poised to launch in Europe this coming April 12 and will retail for €1,695 for the 256 GB variant — about $2,109. The 512 GB model costs €2,095 — about $2,607. These are, of course, insane prices, but do keep in mind that Huawei itself knows that this will appeal to Porsche fans. Or simply put, people who are rich enough to have their own Porsche cars and probably wouldn't mind shelling out over $2,000 for a car-themed phone.

The phone will come in black or red colorways. It also comes with a "beautifully designed leather phone case accessory to match the lifestyle of the demanding target group," Huawei says.
