Telltale Games has found its sweet spot in the field of serialized storytelling, thanks to successes with licensed properties The Wolf Among Us, Tales From the Borderlands, the recently-released Game of Thrones, and of course the award-winning The Walking Dead.

Not content to rest on those high marks, Telltale has forged its next partnership. But this one might take you by surprise.

That's right: Telltale is teaming up with Mojang to create something called Minecraft: Story Mode. It will function just like other Telltale titles, releasing in serialized episodes and focusing on story and player choice. But Telltale is quick to caution fans that this will not be an official story for main character Steve (it'll introduce new characters instead), or a LEGO Movie-style meta explanation of the Minecraft universe's existence.

What the story will be is something Telltale can't say yet. All the developer will spill is that it's collaborating with Mojang and members of the Minecraft community to ensure its authenticity.

"People really like the idea of stories about Minecraft, but forcing a narrative into our core game experience would restrict players' freedom to view the world in their own unique ways. Instead, letting them explore an alternate interpretation via Minecraft: Story Mode, driven by the proven might of Telltale, seems like a no-brainer," said Mojang's "Chief Word Officer" Owen Hill. "We're big fans of Telltale Games at Mojang, and we can't wait to reveal more details on Story Mode soon."

The first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode is set to arrive sometime in 2015 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
