Huawei's new Nova 4 should perhaps come as little surprise. Tipsters leaked renders of the phone a few days ago, and as typical of these leaks, they turned out to be true.

However, that shouldn't take away from how monumental a phone this is for Huawei. For one, it's one of the company's first experiments with the punch hole design, mere days after Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8s, which also features a similar aesthetic.

Huawei Nova 4 Punch Hole Design

"Punch hole" here refers to an emerging smartphone design trend that puts a camera cutout atop the screen to maximize screen real estate. A seemingly direct response to the notch design popularized by Essential and Apple, the punch hole is arguably a less severe stopgap until manufacturers figure out how to remove bezels entirely.

Since it's still new, right now it's difficult to pinpoint exactly how audiences feel about the punch hole. The general feeling is positive, though, particularly because it takes up less space than a lot of notches and looks less intrusive in use cases.

In the case of the Nova 4, Huawei didn't just make a phone with a punch hole for the novelty effect — the device is packing some pretty impressive specs, starting with the 25-megapixel selfie shooter. While Samsung beat Huawei to the punch with the Galaxy A8s, the Nova 4 outpunches any of Samsung's phones by miles in terms of cameras alone, and not just the front camera, either — the Nova 4 features a whopping 48 megapixels on the back, a configuration reminiscent of Nokia's old handsets with massive lenses.

Huawei Nova 4 Specs

More specifically, the Nova 4 features a triple-camera system on the back, certainly not unheard of these days, especially in the premium flagship category. The front boasts a massive 6.4-inch display featuring a resolution of 2,310 x 1,080. Underneath it all is a Kirin 970 processor, the same chip found on the View 10 and P20 Pro. The phone comes with 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor as well. Keeping everything juiced up is a respectable 3,750 mAh battery, and the phone supports fast-charging via USB Type-C.

Huawei Nova 4 Pricing And Release Date

The Nova 4 costs CNY 3,399 for the model with the above-mentioned specs, which is roughly $490 when converted. There is, however, a cheaper CNY 3,099 — about $450 — that switches the 48-megapixel sensor for a 20-megapixel one.
