A new kind of equipment is now being used

Italian doctors have been trying to fight the Coronavirus or the COVID-19 by using a new type of equipment called 'bubble helmets' to treat critically unstable patients that need breathing assistance.

These helmets are air-tight and transparent. These have also shown to aid ill patients to breathe better and easier and boost their chances of survival and recovery. In normal circumstances, ventilators, which are used to support breathing, are connected to the patient using a face mask.

With more of this equipment on hand, there is no doubt that the risks of respiratory disease among patients will go down.

According to DailyMail, experts in the University of Chicago tested this equipment back in 2016, where they found that they 'made a substantial difference' for patients that have ARDS or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

ARDS causes some fluid to form in the lungs and can eventually lead to death. This is why patients need ventilation. The team then split all 83 patients into two groups. They have published their research in the illustrious Journal of the American Medical Association.

Regular masks expose the patients to greater risks

Half of the patients were given the helmets, and the other half used standard face masks. After reviewing data, results have shown that the face masks imposed a greater risk and threat to the condition of the patients.

The helmets, on the other hand, had better advantages, especially that they are sealed with an air-tight collar that wraps softly around the neck. This is also less likely to cause leakage and that doctors can actually pump more air for those who are having a bad time breathing.

Though, it is unclear if the NHS actually uses these helmets regularly. The British Thoracic Society has aid that these are a better alternative to regular face masks. New ventilators will be available to NHS hospitals for COVID-19 after the government launches an appeal for fabricators to start developing them.

DailyMail has said that Matt Hancock, who this the Health Secretary was shocked about how unbelievably good the response is from the industry as firms have already produced a prototype. There have been thousands of offers to help in the construction of these machines, which are pretty much vital for preventing coronavirus from spreading through the respiratory system.

Everyone else has been hoping that manufacturers would produce more of these ventilators or bubble helmets, which have helped a lot in Italy-aiding in better breathing for the patients who are now extremely and critically ill, thanks to the coronavirus or COVID-19 that has been spreading like wildfire.
