Two new displays to choose from

Dell has stated that the new CPS 17 9700 will be going on sale this summer with a price tag of $1,499 which basically means they have a version that doesn't come with high-end components. The highlight of this new laptop is obviously its 17-inch display. Unlike previous laptops that are also 17-inch, Dell's version has a custom panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio rather than the normal 16:9.

There are currently two kinds of display options and both are running on 60Hz. The first one is the standard 1920x1200 resolution FHD+ screen that can go as high as 100% RGB color space. It also comes with an anti-glare finish.

The second one is the touch-enabled 4K UHD+ screen for those that value pixel density. This has a resolution of 3840x2400 and is rated to hit at 100% of the Adobe RGB color space and is greater than 94% of the DCI-P3. This display abides by the HDR 400 spec for color depth and luminance and hits 500 units when it comes to brightness, plus it also has an anti-smudge and anti-reflective finish.

According to PC World, "Both screens offer 178-degree viewing angles and support both the Dolby Vision HDR 4K video format and the Eyesafe standard for reducing blue emissions from the screen-without that horrible brown tint that makes it look like you're wearing As Seen On TV Blue Blocker sunglasses. Eyesafe screens essentially look "normal," but without the blue emissions that disturb your sleep and hurt your eyes."

Impressive specs

When it comes to the overall specs, it is safe to say that Dell spares no expense with its top tier XPS devices. For example, the CPU of the Dell XPS 17 sports Intel's latest 10th-gen Comet Lake H CPU. Users can choose from Core i9-10885H, with-core Core i7-10875H, six-core Core i7-10750H, or the Core i5-10300H. It would have been nice to have a Ryzen CPU but their line up goes well for laptops that have heavier and larger designs.

As for the RAM and GPU, all of the device's configurations are now based on the standard DDR4 modules in dual channel mode with 64GB, 32GB, 16GB, and 8GB capacities.

For the XPS 17's battery, Tech Spot said that "Despite making the XPS 17 almost as thin as the LG Gram 17 (0.77 inches versus 0.7 inches), you can fit a 97 Wh battery inside. You can also opt for a smaller, 56 Wh battery as a compromise for people who need to carry it around often and are willing to sacrifice battery life to shave some weight. The maxed-out configuration weighs around a pound more than the base configuration, which is already a hefty 4.65 pounds."

The updated version of the XPS 15 is now available in Canada and the United States starting at $1,299 and will arrive in other regions soon.
