The newborn babies were found out positive for coronavirus on June 17 and were delivered in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. According to Monica Rangel, the Health Secretary of Mexico, the tests were carried out to comply with the states' health protocols on premature births; the health authorities said that the test results came back positive three days later.

"The triplets we are monitoring are stable. They are evolving favorably. One of them continues using an antibiotic, but they are doing well. We hope this continues so they can be reunited with their parents soon," said Rangel in a news conference on Wednesday, June 24.

According to CNN's previous report, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in new guidelines released Wednesday, June 24, suspected or confirmed, all newborns delivered to women with COVID-19 infections. CDC said infants might be at a higher risk for severe forms of the disease than older children.

Rangel said that both of the babies' parents tested negative for coronavirus. She added the parents used video calls to see their children.

"What we need to look at is a situation where perhaps [the virus] is being transmitted through the placenta. That's not something that we can be sure of. Those are theories that we have to look at. It's a new virus. There still is not literature available internationally on this issue, but it will be worth reviewing," she said.

The test was confirmed to be carried out before the babies are even born. Mexico's coronavirus cases are already closing into 200,000. With health ministry reporting 6,288 new cases, the country recorded another daily record on Tuesday, June 23; This brings Mexico to 23,377 coronavirus cases.

The ministry reported that the country's current death toll is 23,377, bringing 793 new deaths from the virus. Meanwhile, the medical researchers are still looking for other potential sources of the infection, such as the breast milk of the mother. Health officials confirmed that the babies, who had developed a respiratory infection, were responding properly to antibiotic treatments.

"Now that we have the negative result of the PCR [polymerase chain reaction] tests done on both parents, the case it's even more relevant, not only for the investigation our doctors in the state are doing but for the worldwide research on the behavior of the virus itself," said Rangel.

The report confirmed that the newborn triplets were delivered in Ignacio Morones Prieto Central Hospital.
