A director accuses Hollywood of censoring films to appease China. He added that "China has bought [our] silence with their money."

MSNBC's Ari Melber had a chance to talk to the director, comedian, and producer Judd Apatow. During the program Mavericks with Ari Melber, The King of Staten Island helmer warned about the "corporate type of censorship" that happens to films when presented in countries with strict rules in content, including China, Saudi Arabia, and North Korea. He added people should pay attention to it.
These countries would not let the film and television companies criticize them through movies, according to Apatow. He also explained that studios would not air documentaries that go deep into truthful areas because of criticism. What's scarier is that the film producers completely shut down critical content about human rights abuses in China.
"The United States has abandoned the world when it comes to human rights," said the director.
"Hey, I want to write a movie about the concentration camps in China and Muslims in concentration camps," he added.
Some changes in blockbuster films
Apatow said that China had bought people's silence with their money. PEN America, a nonprofit company that advocates for freedom of speech, filed a report stating that Hollywood was normalizing films' censorship to have access to Chinese audiences.

The company claims that the 2016 blockbuster film Dr. Strange has removed a major Tibetan character to appease with Beijing. Another movie that was changed is the Top Gun. In 2019, some viewers noticed that the Japanese and Taiwanese flags were removed from the main character's jacket.
Some Twitter users speculated that the flags were removed because it was partly produced by Tencent Pictures, Chinese film production, and distributor companies.
Tencent has previously been involved in films such as Kong: Skull Island, Venom, Wonder Woman, and the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate.
