People rarely see holograms from heaven because it is expensive and not easy to make. However, recently, Kim Kardashian-West received this as a gift. She celebrated her 40th birthday with family and close friends on$1,000,000 island getaway. Then, on Thursday, October 30, shared a clip of his father's hologram on Twitter, which her husband Kanye West gifted her.

"A special surprise from heaven. A hologram of my dad. It is so lifelike! We watched it over and over, filled with emotion," Kim said on her tweet.

Kim's father, Robert Kardashian showed up in a beige suit in hologram and said "Happy Birthday Kimberly!" In the video that went on for three minutes, Robert's hologram  noted how she was proud of Kim who later posted another tweet thanking her husband for a "memory that will last a lifetime."

Top celebrity holograms

Mr. Kardashian joins the other deceased celebrities who reappeared in holograms. In 2012, the holographic image of Tupac Shakur performed with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre in Coachella concert in 2012. Also, the King of Pop Michael Jackson appeared in Billboard Music Awards in 2014 five years after his death.

Amy Winehouse also had a hologram tour earlier this year with Show Amy Forever in Kyiv 2020. Similarly, Whitney Houston's hologram went on tour in the U.K. in March. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan came back to life as a hologram in 2018 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.

How hologram technology works

However, these imageries are not really holograms as how they are shown in science fictions. Instead, it relies on the 19th century optical illusion technique called Pepper's Ghost, which creates a three-dimensional image.

To create an illusion, a flat, large glass sheet called optical beam splitter is utilized in reverse to link two images towards the point of view of the audience. From the glass surface, one image is reflected towards the viewers while the second scene is being conveyed through the glass.

Also, controlled stage lighting is necessary to illuminate the scenes, not the glass itself as it is invisible to the audience. This creates a genuine combined image while the illusion involves the audience's not sensing the glass.

While the hologram technology was invented in 1947 by Dennis Gabor, its commercial application is still not available. He used a mercury vapor lamp, which created monochrome blue light while filters made it more coherent. In 1971, his invention earned Gabor a Nobel Prize in Physics.

The production company Kaleida claimed to have created the "holographic resurrection" of Kim's father with a copy of the video posted on its website. The company created the on-screen three-dimensional holographic resurrection using performance, DeepFake technologies, SFX, VFX, and motion tracking.

The website post also indicated Tahiti as the location for the project. It is also where Kardashian-West is believed to have celebrated her birthday.

How much does a hologram cost?

While production companies creating holograms do not advertise the price ub their website, MTV reported in 2012 that Tupac's hologram cost from $100,000 to $400,000. However, Deepfake technology becomes more accessible, creating holograms may be cheaper as rumors say the cost is likely around $300,000 to $400,000.
