Professional Esports Player Penalized

According to a report by Inven Global, Riot Games, the developer of the popular multiplayer online battle arena game, has officially announced a competitive ruling against the professional esports player for the next competitive season of "LoL."

Based on the announcement the company made, OnFleek has to pay a 1 million Korean Won (about $900) fine and will be banned for three competitive matches next season.

"It has been confirmed that OnFleek had used an inappropriate comment while reporting a player during his stream. After checking the facts, we decided to penalize OnFleek with a three-match ban and a 1M KRW fine," Riot wrote.

Shortly after Riot issued the announcement, OnFleek's gaming team has also decided to penalize their jungler for the incident, adding a 3 million KRW (about $2,690) fine, 30 hours of community service, as well as suspending the gamer for the entirety of the first round for the next season.

SANDBOX Gaming has also commented on the incident, saying, "We will educate about the seriousness and danger of using discriminating or racist comments to all of the players. We'll continue to educate and examine regularly so that such doesn't happen again."

Racism in the Gaming Community

Unfortunately, racism, sexism, and hate comments remain rampant in the gaming community across the globe.

During the middle-half of the year, former Riot Games exec Ross Johnson stepped down from his post as global head of consumer products after the company investigated a racist post on his Facebook account regarding the death of George Floyd.

According to The Wrap, Johnson was initially placed on leave briefly during the investigation, but the company later announced that he was no longer employed with the company.

Riot Games is just one of the companies that have vowed to help end racism and hate within the community, especially as these problems were highlighted this year after the death of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in the hands of the police, as well as sexual harassment and sexism against the tons of women in the gaming industry.

Helping Avoid Hate

Several gaming companies, such as Electronic Arts (EA), have since then modified their community rules in the hopes of preventing more hate comments.

Furthermore, Riot Games and EA were also among the companies that donated their money to support the minority.

In a report by PC Games Insider last June 2020, Riot vowed to donate $10M to minority-led studios, while EA donated $1M to organizations dedicated to fighting racial injustice both in the United States well as around the world.

Although the gaming community is taking steps to fight racism, sexism, and hate, these are not enough, but these steps are better than ignoring these issues that are widespread in the community.
