With the new foldable touchscreen phones being one of the biggest innovations in smartphone technology, it could be hard to picture out what smartphones would be able to do next, until now! A recent patent reveals that Oppo might be planning to make smartphones with removable cameras in the future!

OPPO new patent

According to an article by SlashGear, phone makers have previously had a love-hate relationship along with the front camera. It is still pretty much the only reason that some phones have even been focusing its resources in creating phones that are able to deal with the age of selfies as well as video conferencing.

There are reportedly few solutions to either hiding or even removing the front-face camera altogether. From the punch-hole cutouts all the way to the under-display, there could be a couple of ways around this. Oppo's latest patent technically does not revolve around the selfie camera but rather its new idea of a more modular, removable, and also upgradable camera system that will indirectly address this.

Modular phones

The industry has now given up on the main idea of having modular phones after the known Google Project Ara was previously discontinued and the known LG G5 was deemed unpopular. This, however, does not mean that the modular phones do not come with benefits especially economically in the long run.

According to 91mobiles, the patent was shown showing OPPO's new take on the modular camera. During its normal state, the camera is seen nested directly on the back of the given phone which still looks like a regular camera bump. The difference, however, is that it can now be removed directly from the phone's back. This reveals a particular USB-C connector which serves as a kind of way for the camera to instantly communicate with the phone's own mainboard.

Not the first patent

While this could theoretically result in the camera being easily upgradable or replaceable, it can also open the door for other future uses. The very same USB-C connector can simply be connected directly to the phone's main charging as well as data port. This should turn it into a particular hoc selfie camera. Though, this would still require using the phone's own upside directly down.

The patent is said to also describe a particular wireless connection sort of like a Bluetooth and Wifi, as well as a particular built-in battery which would allow the given camera model to be utilized both independently as well as remotely. As interesting as the given idea might be, it is still just a patent and does not include final assurance of the upcoming feature being rolled out.

Quite coincidentally, it was also reported that Vivo comes along with a much similar idea as well as a working prototype but a particular one that could utilize a particular removable popup camera instead.
