How to Stop Doomscrolling

Looking at your news feed all day is now made easier through endless scrolling  Sometimes, in hopes of finding the best news to lighten your day, you end up getting exhausted from the negativities that you absorb on social media platforms.

Know Your Meme described doomscrolling as the act of exposing one's self to an online news filled with bad vibes. The social media applications serve as the medium of an emotional predicament experience by a user. In the first place, why would people force themselves to dwell in the bad news?

Admit it or not, you can scroll your feed on FB or Twitter for many hours without getting bored. It's like a social media application is made for the people to escape from the cruelty of the world. Perhaps, the projected form of leisure is tackled, but by any means, doomscrolling is detrimental in the long run.

According to Metro, doomscrolling can also be called "doomsurfing." For Cyberpsychology Associate Course Leader, Dr. Daria Kuss, doomscrolling has become more trending during the peak of the pandemic.

In the process of confinement, people like to seek connection with others, that is why embracing the social media became a major interest of many.

"We have become conditioned to use social media more during the pandemic. We reach for social media to connect socially, to feel a sense of community and belonging," Kuss said.

To refrain from doomscrolling, Kuss told that limiting social media exposure can stop doomscrolling. She added that connecting to your loved ones, friends and other people will remove the negative stories that you read from social media.

The chartered scientist from NTU continued that spending time with your pets, engaging in physical activities, feeling the nature and unplugging will spell a big difference, The Tab reported.

Doomscrolling is one of the words created during the pandemic. Amidst its bad implications to the social media users, some have find ways to alleviate its impact on people's health. Some made memes from Facebook, while others created in Twitter. Indeed, doomscrolling has been on autopilot output of the 'meme factories.'
