According to Game Rant's latest report, the Google VR Cardboard headset only costs around $20. The company decided to do this so that a wider audience can access its virtual reality technology.

If you are not familiar with it, the popular Google VR Cardboard headset allows users to use cardboard as their VR headset's mainframe. Google's package also includes two curved lenses to enhance the graphics of your Google Lens app.

Aside from the cardboard setup and lenses, the users only need an Android or iOS smartphone. However, this cheap product is still way behind other high-end VR headsets such as Valve Index and Oculus series.

Say goodbye to the Google VR Cardboard headset

Google confirmed that it will no longer offer its cheap VR gadget. This means that the product is now tagged as a "dead item" in the market. It became popular since all Android, and iPhone users can easily use it.

Google VR Cardboard allows them to place their smartphones within the cardboard headset in landscape mode. Once it is properly in place, their smartphones would play two separate images in tandem. On the other hand, the two lenses will independently mimic the standard VR experience, while the device's accelerometers provide three degrees of freedom for users.

Although the Google VR Cardboard headset didn't provide great graphics and other features, it still helped Google's and other companies' VR technology. It might not be available today, but it will still be one of virtual reality technology foundations.

Making your own Google VR Cardboard headset

Making your own cardboard VR headset is really easy. All you need to do are cardboard and a pair of lenses. The current VR headsets are using what they call Fresnel lenses since these offer better-focusing performance than the conventional optical lens. It has a high groove density that allows high-quality images. On the other hand, the version that has low groove density offers better efficiency.

You can easily buy this type of lens from Amazon, Alibaba, and other e-commerce or online selling companies. You can also use convex or concave lenses, which are offered by Nikon, Canon, and other DLSR manufacturers. On the other hand, you can follow this PDF step-by-step guide on making the base cardboard frame.
