Netflix has cracked down on users that co-use an account on Netflix, particularly as they use the account on another device that is not the initially registered or logged-on device used by the subscriber of the profile. Years after the company's neutrality on the matters of password sharing, it seems to be changing course and enforcing a strict rule.

The COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the popularity of online streaming applications for films and series like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and the like. The service offers four profiles of users, in a single account for home use and sharing within the family, as they pay a monthly subscription fee that is fairly an affordable one after increasing costs over the past months.

Moreover, account sharing is ideal, especially if the people shared with the account are part of the family, and it may be a big one, which cannot fit each user in a single profile. However, it seems that the company is now cracking down on Netflix users, particularly on shared accounts and password-sharing with friends and unrelated ones which use the account.

Netflix Password Sharing

Theoretically, Netflix accounts can be logged on by many users and used within various devices to access its services and keep it on the said device like smartphone, browser, or television. However, only four can watch or stream at a time, and that is the golden rule from the company, which means that people need to coordinate the usage of the stream.

In recent developments, according to CNBC, Netflix is on the verge of trying out a new system within its account sharing parameters which suggests that the "extra" user to create their account if they are watching remotely from the subscriber. The case is now on trial, saying that Netflix is aiming to debut this policy, which could potentially log out millions of users.

Ironically, one-third of Netflix's community is comprised of password-sharing users, all using the service without their accounts, and borrows the log-in credential of a family or friend. Potentially, this could anger several users from social media, with some already posting screenshots of "Start Your Own Netflix" pop-up messages on their screens.

While there are intended users of the Netflix account, several piggybackers are enjoying streaming privileges and features without the need to pay for the service, and sometimes, they get more of the experience. This is a massive problem, especially for the rightful users that want to stream the hottest series on Netflix now.

Netflix only offers "Sign Out of All Devices," to log out and remove unwanted devices that use the account, and doing so would take effect up to eight hours after the command.

  • Using a browser, go to netflix.com
  • Go to Account > Sign Out of All Devices in the Settings tab
  • Change your Password or Re-Log in manually to the intended devices for use.
