The ancient Mesopotamian god-king, Gilgamesh, will be the next deity to step into the Battleground of the Gods, clashing with Tiamat in the new Cinematic Reveal Trailer.

On Mar. 30, the SMITE by Titan Forge Games YouTube channel released the cinematic reveal, running close to a minute. The new animated video shows Gilgamesh duking it out with fellow Babylonian god Tiamat - the first from the Babylonian pantheon to be released in the game a month earlier - falling from a tall tower.

The Savior of Babylon and King of Uruk Revealed

Evading the cloud of dust and rubble, The King of Uruk reels and regains composure, revealing his large and fiery scimitar. As the primordial queen and Goddess of the Salt Sea lunge forward, Gilgamesh dives underneath and slices the underbelly of the dragon. He then follows it with a glorious dropkick, in slow motion, before Tiamat responds with a tail whip that sends Gilgamesh flying. The next few seconds show the details on the impressive character design - the gem-studded shoulder pad, the braided hair and bear, the crown, as well as details on the guard and hilt of his scimitar - before he glows and calls forth a pillar of light.

As Tiamat returns to the top of the tower, Gilgamesh is joined by two more god-heroes from the game: the Greek God of the Sky Zeus and the Roman Goddess of War Bellona. The three gods face the threatening Tiamat before the scene cuts to black, soon revealing that Gilgamesh is slated for an April 2021 release as a part of the game's Season 8.

The overall character design for Gilgamesh has been teased as early as last January when Titan Forge Games revealed Tiamat in her own Cinematic Reveal. As the primordial queen reshapes reality in her own image and summons her Children of Creation, Gilgamesh can be seen in a bridge fighting towards her. Tiamat greets him as coming to "seek immortality," only to find death.

With the introduction of Gilgamesh on the game's next update on Apr. 20, SMITE now places its foot firmly on the expansion of the Babylonian pantheon in addition to its existing roster from the Greek, Roman, Chinese, Hindu, Japanese, Egyptian, Norse, Slavic, and Yoruba mythologies.

The complete details about Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk, will be revealed on the SMITE Website, shortly after the Update Show on the SMITE Twitch Channel on Mar. 31, 3:00 PM EST.

From the Epic of Gilgamesh

Modern knowledge about Gilgamesh mostly comes from the "Epic of Gilgamesh," an epic poem in the Akkadian language dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. Historians suggest that he was likely an actual king in existence that was later deified, ruling over the ancient Sumerian city-state of Uruk sometime during the Early Dynastic Period.

Immortalized by one of the oldest surviving literary texts, Gilgamesh and his exploits have inspired countless works of art - appearing in publications and shows and video games. Gilgamesh serves as the Sumerian civilisation leader in the 4X strategy game Civilization III Conquests expansion pack, Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, and returns in Civilization VI.
