Xbox and PlayStation are taking in more indie games under their belt, including "Protocol," a first-person sci-fi comedy adventure game on Apr. 30.

The introduction of indie games on Xbox and Playstation is nothing new, but its increasing number recently has been attributed to the slowing down of major game launches from notable game developers and publishers.

'Protocol:' The First Person Action Game With An Ambiguous Genre

"Protocol," an indie game released on Steam in 2018, tells the story of an unnamed protagonist who volunteers to join a secret government program called Protocol.

Presumably set in a not-so-distant future, "Protocol" is an adventure puzzle game with an intriguing plot filled with plot twists, conspiracies, dark humor, countless expletives, some light-hearted mockery, and a twisted love story.

According to the game's official Steam page, the objective is to make "first contact" with an alien life form without violating any of the Protocol.

Doing so would result in the termination of both the protagonist and the entire operation.

Players may see an increase of games with an unusual premise in 2021 on both Xbox and Playstation, after announcing such games like one where players need to drink a glass of water every time there is a sale.

Other Indie Games to Watch Out For

Due to the scarcity of the latest game consoles in the market, namely the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, game publishers had not been pressured to push out major game launches as often as before.

According to a Tom's Guide report on Apr. 11, the slow down was attributed to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing game developers to figure out remote game development.

On the other hand, PlayStation had been branching out of its game console and into PC but had been selecting on what to bring along to the platform.

Fortunately, indie game developers and publishers continued to push out new games to fill the gap of game scarcity on both consoles.

Here are some of the games players must watch for:

'Cris Tales'

"Cris Tales" follows the story of the newly awakened Time Mage named Crisbell, who takes on a mission to bring down the Time Empress. The classic Japanese RPG features old-school yet stunning visuals and offers a new perspective and dynamic gameplay.

'Edge of Eternity'

Another classic Japanese RPG that is reminiscent of the highly-acclaimed "Final Fantasy" franchise, "Edge of Eternity" follows the story of a young soldier named Daryon who sets off on a journey and gathers a party of adventurers and faces a variety of enemies.

'12 Minutes'

An adventure game wherein players are forced to go through a never-ending time loop in order to solve the tragedy that befalls a couple on a night out. The indie game is not holding back in its casting, as reports say the game characters will be voiced by A-list stars James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Willem Dafoe.
