SAN FRANCISCO, CA - SEPTEMBER 07: Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller announces AirPods during a launch event on September 7, 2016 in San Francisco, California. Apple Inc. is expected to unveil latest iterations of its smart phone, forecasted to be the iPhone 7. The tech giant is also rumored to be planning to announce an update to its Apple Watch wearable device.

Currently, the sensors of the smartphone and wearable of the Cupertino company work together to produce health data for its users. However, the AirPods still do not contribute to the data gathering.

AirPods for Fitness Tracking

Even as early as December 18, 2017, CNBC argued that the AirPods is better than the Apple Watch for fitness tracking.

The news website pointed that the headphones sit on a person's ear. As such, it is simpler to collect the heart rate, temperature, and pulse rate. On the other hand, the wrist is a complicated route to measure these vital signs.

Given that, the AirPods would be a perfect health device after all.

Some medical experts told CNBC that wireless headphones are overlooked as a health device. They noted that the ear is the ideal body part to measure the vital signs of a person.

Meanwhile, TechCrunch asked Kevin Lynch, the Apple Vice President for Technology, about the possibility of health sensors for AirPods. The executive answered that: "We already do sensor fusion across some devices today, and I think there's all kinds of potential here."

AirPods Pro 2022: Health Sensors

MacRumors reported that reliable leaker, Ming-Chi Kuo, first hinted that the AirPods is getting much-awaited health features.

Moreover, Kuo predicted that Apple is anticipated to lose 25% of AirPods shipments in comparison to its 2020 performance. So, the added sensors are meant to overcome the decline of its sales.

Kuo claimed on May 17 that the next AirPods will particularly feature "health management functions."

On May 28, Bloomberg echoed the leaker. It also reported that the AirPods Pro in 2022 is getting motion sensors for fitness tracking, which integrates with Fitness Plus. The information came from a person close to the matter.

Additionally, the Cupertino giant reportedly also working to delete the stems of the Pro variant. And the noise cancellation is also likely to be improved.

In a separate report, MacRumors added in another report that the fitness tracking AirPods Pro is supposed to be out by this year, but it has since been delayed to 2022.

Meanwhile, the latest iOS 15 update exhibits new food tracking features. It only shows that Apple is focusing on the health functions of its devices. So, it is not farfetched that even the AirPods is likely to sport health sensors as well.
