According to Jack Conte, the CEO of Patreon, they are exempted from Apple App Store's commission on the in-purchases. He added that their platform is "within the company's guidelines," which is why they are not charged with fees.

However, for some reason, he still did not know why they were not required to pay fees.

In a recent report with The Verge on Tuesday, June 22, an in-app commission for the internal purchases with the Apple App Store accounts for 30%. For the developers, it is a 15% charge. The case of Patreon is different from other firms and involved individuals since it is allowed to never pay for the commission.

The Verge interviewed Patreon CEO Jack Conte if he's certain about the implementation for the app purchases. Conte said that he was not certain why Apple allows that in their platform.

If you are wondering if Conte has special ties with the tech titan, the answer is no. Conte stated that Patreon has no extraordinary contract with Apple and they have to comply with the policies that the App Store imposes. In addition, they also follow the review processes as the other companies do.

Conte is aware that the company sometimes experiences several delays when asking for the approval of the updates. When the time comes, Apple acts to administer the necessary changes.

"Why don't we have to pay fees? I think it's because, for whatever reason, we're within Apple's guidelines, and we haven't had to pay fees," Conte pointed out in the interview.

What Patreon CEO Recalls About its Rejection From Apple

The Patreon app was denied by the electronics giant in the past. Four years before it happened, Conte remembered that there was a discussion made between them and Apple. He was uncertain about the exact details of the conversation, but he concluded that his company has been given the green light to operate under Apple's approval.

Moreover, the Patreon boss explained that most engagements involved popular streaming apps like Discord which are outside the scope of the App Store. For Conte, his firm is responsible for guiding many users when it comes to web signups.

To date, there is no clear explanation why Patreon is not required to pay for the commission fees on the App Store. Not all guidelines cover the exemption since the distribution of gifts to digital services is not applicable. This is a perk that Patreon developers give to the fans.

In the Patreon app in iOS, Conte said that only a "tiny portion of pledges" is allocated, Apple Insider reported.

Similarly, the Fanhouse which works like Patreon has been protesting a 30% commission that Apple should give to its developers. While Conte knows what Fanhouse's campaign is all about, he declined to comment further about that.

The Patreon CEO is aware that the platform has already passed the review process upon the changes that took effect before.
