macOS Monterey's Universal Control Feature

As per TechRadar, the Universal Control is one of the most significant features of the macOS Monterey that Apple users are waiting for.

It allows Mac users to control an iPad by using its keyboard and mouse or trackpad.

Not to mention that it also allows dragging and dropping of files from the two devices as if the tablet is a second screen of the Mac.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - JUNE 13: Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, introduces the new macOS Sierra software at an Apple event at the Worldwide Developer's Conference on June 13, 2016 in San Francisco, California. Thousands of people have shown up to hear about Apple's latest updates.

The Universal Control was first announced by the Cupertino giant during the WWDC, along with other highlight features of the new macOS, such as the Shortcuts, the radical redesign of the Safari browser, as well as the Live Text function.

On top of these key features, Apple touts macOS Monterey to further introduce an option that wipe out its drive without having to go through the hassle of reinstalling the operating system.

However, the Universal Control feature remains unseen since the announcement last June 9.

It is to note that the public beta of the macOS Monterey has been live since July, and there are no signs of it yet.

Thankfully, some users of the Monterey beta found a way to partially enable one of its key functions.

macOS Monterey: How to Enable Universal Control

It is worth noting that enabling Universal Control requires you to be part of the beta program the macOS Monterey.

Aside from that, the feature only works on Macs that were released from 2016 onwards as iCloud and Handoff functions are required.

According to 9to5Mac, once you've installed the latest beta version of macOS 12 Monterey, you'll be needing to download a file from GitHub. It is the code that Developer Zhuowei Zhang used to enable the Universal Control feature.

After downloading the code from GitHub, move it to this folder destination: "/Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/.

It is to note though that if ever the folder could not be found on your Mac, you may opt to create it yourself instead. And that's it.

Upon completion of the file transfer to the said folder, reboot your Mac to enable its new feature.

TechRadar further vouched in its report that the Universal Control from GitHub worked smoothly without any known issues. It is to note that it tested on an M1 Mac Mini.

To be exact, the cursor can move from the Mac to the iPad without any hiccups while transferring files from one device to another.
