Shark and human interactions have been increasing since the 1980s, and since sharks are considered sea predators and are not meant to be in the presence of humans, shark bite incidents have doubled in the last couple of decades.

There are so many products that are advertised for protection against sharks, but not all of them have been scientifically tested, potentially giving an exaggerated sense of security to those who are using them.

Shark-Bite Repellant and Deterrent

Shark repellent technology was first launched in the 1990s. They are based on a special short-range electric receptor system that sharks do not go near to.

The shark's snout has jelly-filled pores that can feel electrical signals from nearby prey. Taking advantage of this sensitive sense, scientists have invested in creating deterrents that create electric fields meant to overwhelm the shark's snout.

The technology became an instant hit among surfers and swimmers who wants to stay safe while they swim and surf.

Scientists cited in 2016 that shark attacks may increase due to global warming, and this technology can help reduce that risk.

According to Boston Herald, the sales of shark deterrents skyrocketed after a man was killed by a shark in Wellfleet back in 2018.

Surf shop owners and residents said that shark-bite repellants were able to save dozens of lives in the past few years. More and more people are buying the technology because they want to get back in the water.

People are willing to spend $500 on the technology to decrease the risk of an interaction with a shark, and it allows them to enjoy the beauty of the ocean peacefully.

Shark Attacks in Australia

In Cape Cod, Australia, there have been four attacks by white sharks since 2012. Wearing the shark deterrent makes a lot of people feel at ease. Whether it is 40% or 80% effective, it is better than having no protection against being bitten by a shark.

The devices can be worn around the ankles, attached to surfboards, or placed on scuba gear.

Australian scientists found that the deterrents could save more than 1,000 people from getting bitten by sharks by 2066. That is 24 people saved every year, according to NCBI.

Australia has recorded hundreds of shark attacks throughout the years. In the United States, Hawaii is the state that has the most number of shark attacks.

Sharkbanz and its Products

Although not all deterrents are scientifically proven, some have undergone several tests and studies to ensure their effectiveness. One of them is Sharkbanz.

Sharkbanz technology was established in 2014, and it took the company ten years to create the most effective shark repellant. The product was peer-reviewed and was scientifically researched.

Sharkbanz built a deterrent band that is designed for marine professionals, beachgoers, surfers, swimmers, and ocean athletes. It uses a patented magnetic technology that is created by marine biologists to deter sharks.

The product has no batteries, and you don't need to charge it. It is always on so you can use it for hours while you go for a swim. It is safe for users who are five years old and above, and it has a universal fit, so you can adjust it anytime. You can even wear it on your ankle or your wrist.

Sharkbanz also has a product that you can attach to your fishing gear to repel sharks that are after your catch.

The product overwhelms the shark's electroreception, and it creates an unpleasant sensation that can stop them from their tracks.
