Maserati, an Italian luxury automaker, unveiled its brand-new compact SUV called Grecale. The new SUV is expected to come in a range of powertrains, including electric versions to be released in 2023.

This signals the company's plan to become an EV-only brand by 2030.

Maserati to Launch EVs

Last week, Maserati announced its plans to launch a series of electric vehicles bearing the brand name Folgore, which means "lightning" in English, according to The Verge.

One of the first vehicles to feature that nameplate will be the Grecale, a crossover SUV slotting underneath the mid-size Levante, which Maserati introduced in 2016.

Maserati keeps most of the electric vehicle's relevant specs secret, including its battery size, range, and charging time. The Grecale will come with a 400-volt architecture, similar to the one used by most electric vehicles on the road today.

The Folgore model will have its own electric vehicle platform and won't necessarily use any Stellantis' EV-specific platforms, according to Maserati's executives. Grecale will also use a modified version of the Giorgio platform that Alfa Romero Stelvio uses.

The front grille of Grecale will have the Maserati logo, while the Folgore brand name will be on the driver-side front wing. The boomerang taillights in the rear of the vehicle are inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 GT and fit in with the trapezoidal lines.

The infotainment system is powered by the automaker's intelligent multimedia system inside the vehicle. The vehicle has 14 Sonus sound systems inside.

Aside from the electric version, Maserati will also produce two mild-hybrid versions of the Grecale, Moderna, the GT, and the Trofeo variant, according to Forbes.

The Trofeo's gas-powered V6 engine is based on the Nettuno engine used by the automaker's MC20 sportscar.

The GT variant's price will start at $63,500, while the Modena Limited Edition, which is only available through online reservation for a short period, will start at $77,400. The prices for the EV versions and the Trofeo are still not available.

After the Grecale, the electric versions of the GranTurismo sports coupe and GranCabriolet convertible are expected to be released.

The rest of the Folgore range will be filled out in the next few months, including the MC20 Spyder, the new Quattroporte sports sedan, and the electric version of the automaker's best-selling Levante SUV.

Once Grecale hits dealerships, it is expected to compete with other luxury electric vehicles, including BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Audi E-Tron, and Porsche Taycan.

Automakers Announce Their 2030 EV Target

Several automakers have said that their goal is to go fully electric by 2030. Luxury automaker Porsche said that four out of five of its vehicles will be EV by 2030, according to The Driven.

The German automaker has set itself a target of making sure that 80% of all new vehicle sales will be all-electric by 2030, building on the automaker's previous goal of reaching 50% all-electric vehicles by 2025.

Porsche announced the new goal on the back of its recent financial results, which revealed the automaker hit sales of $36 billion in 2021, representing 15% growth since 2020.
