The day basically commemorates the creation of the World Meteorological Organization long ago in 1950, as per an online story by National Today.

After 11 years since the first World Meteorological Organization was established, the annual celebration of World Meteorological Day began, celebrating the founding date of the said org.

World Meteorological Day: Here's Why it's Important

The World Meteorological Day is meant to remind folks out there regarding their role in taking care of the atmosphere of the planet Earth.

It comes even more relevant as nowadays weather disturbances have become more extreme than ever. Not to mention that the climate in other parts of the world has also changed massively, resulting in intense temperatures.

The World Meteorological Organization or the WMO said in its statement that there are tons of things required to help prevent and prepare us from natural disturbances. It includes "greater coordination between national meteorological and hydrological services, disaster management authorities, and development agencies."

On top of that, according to a recent article by Weather.com, early weather forecasts could not only potentially save lives, but their livelihoods as well.

Despite that, the WMO said that not everyone in the world gets the privilege to access these early warning signs from various forecasts.

Weather predictions say the storm will likely hit the U.S. East Coast as early as Thursday, September 13 bringing massive winds and rain.

WMO also blurted out some statistics regarding the increasing risks of natural disturbances. For the last 50 years, there have been 2 million deaths from various weather, climate, and water-related disasters.

Not to mention that it has also affected the livelihood of millions of people with a staggering $3.64 trillion economic losses in the past years.

World Meteorological Day in 2022

This year, the WMO is commemorating World Meteorological Day carrying the theme "early warning and early action."

The WMO essentially highlights the significance of both climate and hydrometeorological information to prevent and better be prepared for any water-related or climate disasters.

The organization further added that in history, early warnings signs for such natural disturbances have drastically decreased death by three-fold since back in 1970. In addition to that, a couple of disaster risk reduction measures have also made the dwindling lives taken in the past years possible.
