Apple Mac Studio’s potentially upgradable SSD is reportedly blocked by its own software, making the removable storage useless for expansions.

Mac Studio iFixit Teardown

The how-to platform and repair retailer, iFixit, has already disassembled the latest desktop system of Apple, the M1 Max Mac Studio and the Studio Display, as per a news story by MacRumors.

However, the online news outlet noted that the recent Mac Studio Teardown video that iFixit published on YouTube is not yet the full-blown one that the retailer usually does.

Instead, the new teardown content only highlighted some interesting discoveries during the disassembling process of the all-new Apple desktop system.

On the other hand, the more detailed version video of the iFixit teardown has yet to be released.

Mac Studio iFixit Teardown Confirms Replaceable SSD

It is worth noting that previous teardown videos of the Mac Studio have shown that its SSD storage is removable. It comes as M1 Macs no longer have their storage smoldered to its board, making it built-in.

However, previous tests have shown that Apple's software is blocking any upgrade on the SSD capacity of the Mac Studio.

Thus, some folks have concluded that making it removable is merely useless as the device could not recognize a larger SSD storage due to software limitations.

SAN FRANCISCO - JUNE 28: Apple CEO Steve Jobs delivers the keynote address at the 2004 Worldwide Developers Conference June 28, 2004 in San Francisco, California. Jobs announced the 2005 release of OSX Tiger and a new line of flat panel cinema displays including the first 30-inch model designed for the personal computer.

All that said, iFixit also looked into the storage of the Mac Studio saying that it is "time to find out if this modular storage is actually upgradeable.

According to a recent report by 9to5Mac, iFixit tried stuffing various SSDs with higher capacity to the Mac Studio. The retailer even tried to swap a larger SSD capacity from another Mac Studio, but it still did not do the job.

On the other hand, when iFixit tried swapping an SSD with the same capacity as the original storage of the Mac Studio, it worked in the machine without any software limitations.

As such, it appears that the Mac Studio only allows the replacement of its storage with an SSD that carries the same capacity.

Upon doing so, the teardown video shows that the Apple Configurator app allows the installation of macOS on the SSD replacement.

After which, the Mac Studio with a replaced storage worked as it should sans the software prompt.
