Google Meet is now discouraging single-person meetings if the participants don't show up after five minutes. If the participants are more than five minutes late to a scheduled meeting, users will get a notification asking them if they would like to extend and keep waiting.

Google Meets Asks Users If They Want to Leave a Meeting After Five Minutes

According to the story by Engadget, Google Meets is introducing a new feature that helps avoid having to wait a really long time for a meeting that might not even push through. With a simple five-minute time limit, should participants be late and only one person be present in the meeting, the whole meeting is called off, with participants having to reschedule or extend the meeting total.

The publication notes that the tech giant will be rolling out a new Google Meet update that will nudge users to exit meetings whenever they are the only ones in it. Of course, there's still an option for users to wait longer as a notification pops up every five minutes.

Users Given Two Minute Time Limit to Decide to Extend

Once the notification pops up, users will only be given two minutes to confirm whether they want to extend the waiting period. If the users give no answers in two minutes, they will automatically be kicked out of the meeting as well.

These types of time limits are already being implemented by other services as well, like Discord. The time limit is mostly implemented to prevent wasting any unnecessary bandwidth for meetings that might not even push through.

Zoom Time Limit Extends Up to 40 Minutes

Zoom is another service that has already implemented a time limit for idle meetings. However, unlike Google Meet, with just a five-minute wait, Zoom implements waiting times up to 40 minutes in total.

Google gave no word regarding whether or not the company is implementing the new feature to stop wasting resources specifically. As per Engadget, Google is hoping that the new feature will help prevent users from unintentionally broadcasting their video and audio feed.

How to Switch the Time Limit Off

Users, of course, can opt to switch the feature off should they not want to be forced to leave their meetings. The new feature will be implemented on default, but users will still have an option to turn it off.

Users will have to click on General, found under Settings, and turn the feature off manually to turn off the feature. Google will be rolling out the new "leave empty calls" feature gradually starting the 11th of April.

The report will take 15 days for the feature to be automatically implemented for all iOS and desktop users. The feature will also be made available for Android users sometime really soon.
