Unlike other food technologies that can create healthier versions of various foods, this new tech focuses on reducing salt consumption.

Involved researchers claimed that the new electric chopsticks could make around 1.5 times tastier without salt.

"In this joint research, we found the possibility of enhancing taste satisfaction with thin, low-salt diets by utilizing the effect of enhancing saltiness using electrical stimulation," said Meiji University experts via their official website

As of press time, MHLW Japan (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan) aims to achieve at least 20% less salt consumption.

However, this is quite hard to achieve since people don't like their food bland.

But, since the new electric chopsticks can make any food 1.5 tastier, the Asian country's salt consumption problem can be solved.

But, the innovators need to mass-produce their new tech first. Now, how do the new electric chopsticks make food more savory?

How Does the New Electric Chopsticks work?

One of the chopsticks is metal, allowing electric current to pass through it easily. Meanwhile, the other hand is a non-metal chopstick.

Involved scientists said that the electric current makes a specific waveform into the user's mouth. This process can trigger the ions in monosodium glutamate and sodium chloride in food, bringing a salty flavor to them.

Unlike salt, the electric chopsticks allow the food to have tastier umami flavors. On the other hand, Japanese researchers clarified that the electric current used by their new chopsticks is not dangerous at all.

This is because the amount of electricity used in their innovation is undetectable. Thanks to this, diners can use the new electric chopsticks just like the regular ones.
